Job Description:

Job Responsibilities:
- Ensuring site compliance with all laboratory-related regulatory procedures;
- Assisting with the processing, storage and transport of biological research samples (e.g. blood, sputum and urine) when required;
- Performing validation tests on HIV rapid testing, pregnancy tests, trichomonas and urinalyses;
- Monitoring and managing temperature and humidity control processes for storage of sensitive items;
- Compiling and performing version control of laboratory-related standard operating procedures (SOPs);
- Taking responsibility for the chain of custody for study samples until the results have been received;
- Conducting regular stocktaking and ensuring that sufficient materials be available for the required laboratory analyses at all times;
- Performing internal quality control of rapid test kits;
- Serving as primary contact person for any callouts regarding the laboratory;
- Helping to maintain laboratory equipment at the site;
- Capturing specimens on laboratory information management systems (LIMS);
- Serving as primary contact person for any callouts regarding biorepository freezer alarms;
- Performing external quality assurance;
Job Requirements:
- Excellent computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and management of multiple files and folders;
- Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) such as Laboratory Data Management Systems (LDMS) and REDCap;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a team;
- Awareness of the importance of accurate protocol implementation;
- A three-year tertiary qualification in biological, medical, health or life sciences;
- The willingness and availability to work flexible hours.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English;
- The ability to work autonomously;
- Good time management and planning skills;
- A flexible approach to problem-solving that is adaptable to a constantly changing environment, and the ability to show initiative;
- Experience in a research environment, especially of sample handling and of quality control and assurance;
- Effective organisational and administration skills;
- A valid driving license and own transport;
- Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) certification in a sciences area of expertise;
- Excellent investigative skills and attention to detail;
